Writing, talking dogs, the usual...

My writing is getting sluggish right at the worst possible moment. I have to turn in a very short story by the day after tomorrow. I have something written (I wrote it just yesterday), but it needs heavy revision, and I keep getting sidetracked.

I finished Prisoner of Azkaban again, and then went dutifully back to the Samurai Susanna Moodie. Apparently, she had a talking dog:

"[The servant] Jacob's attachment to us, in its simplicity and fidelity, greatly resembled that of the dog; and sometimes, like the dog, he would push himself where he was not wanted, and gratuitously give his advice, and make remarks which were not required.
She seems remarkably unperturbed owning a dog who "gratuitously gives his advice" and who "makes remarks which were not required."

That talking dog must have been a great help to her whilst she was hunting ninjas in the Canadian wilderness.

Also, it turns out I'm a fairy, which is of no surprise to anyone, I'm sure:

You scored as Faerie. Faerie: Aren't you a cute little flying person? Faeries are earth spirits. They live among each element completely hidden. They have cousins called Pixies. Pixies however, are very mischevious. They enjoy tormenting other creatures for fun. Little pranksters.. I hope you never meet one. Pixies have a bad reputation for finding a creature and clinging to them until death. Faeries can be somewhat close to a Pixie, but mostly they are loving, playful, and carry with them a child-like enthusiasm for life. Hide among the pedals of a Daisy, you are a Faerie.

what's a meme stand for???

It doesn't exactly stand for anything.

It started with a rather coldly cynical philosophy that all ideas are like diseases, and some are symbotic and others are parasitic, but all attach to a host. These idea-viruses were called memes by the guy who came up with it.

The reason this is cynical, is that "parasitic" ideas are those that kill or hurt their host -- in other words, all self-sacrificing ideas. If someone gives up their life for another human being, they've simply been infected by a parasitic meme. Meanwhile, someone who lives only for themselves -- a sociopath -- has a "symbiotic" meme.

Someohow, these little games that spread across LiveJournal got the nickname "memes", probably because they spread like diseases, but are made up of ideas. that's different from the original sense, though :)

I should also mention that they're "meme" because it sounds like both "gene" -- the idea of viruses rewriting genetic material -- and "memory" -- as in thought.

Thanks for the background story... and I thought it was an acronym or something. Cool! Thanx!

No problem.

I like the icon, by the way :)

And thanks :)
