Feb. 20th, 2005 06:27 pmMy favourite uncle died this morning, of pneumonia. He was 82. He'd been with my Aunt Else for more than 50 years, though they weren't able to officially marry for the first 10 years or so, because he was already married but had no grounds to divorce his estranged wife. He couldn't get a divorce until Trudeau changed the laws, and then he also had to leave behind his Catholic faith to do it.
He worked at the dockyards all his life, and knew everything about two things: ships and hockey. We didn't have anything in common, but he was one of the nicest and most relaxed people I knew. He walked every day until he couldn't walk anymore (after his second heart attack). He was in perfect health until the last ten years or so.
I know he'd wanted to go for a long time, because he felt like he was a burden to people and didn't like the lack of independence. This morning, he got a wish.
He lived a good life, which is all I can say for anyone. I hope the same can be said of me, truthfully, when my time comes.
Goodbye Uncle Bill. It was fun.
