So I'm reading one of the best novels I've ever read right now -- at least it's that good so far, and I hope the author can sustain that level of power and beauty for 640 pages (I'm about 1/5 of the way through). It's called The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. It's the story of a comic book artist and writer whose lives are as interesting and amazing as that of the superhero they've created.
It takes place in the 30s and 40s. The artist, Joe Kavalier, is also a trained escape artist who not only got himself out of Nazi-occupied Prague, but smuggled the remnants of the Golem of Prague out with him. His cousin, Sammy Clay, is leading a secret double life. Michael Chabon paints these incredible pictures in prose so perfectly, and so subtly that sometimes you really feel like you're reading a well-drawn comic book. It's funny and beautiful at once, and very original, and has a power that seems to radiate off the page.
I hope I actually have time to finish it before my class on Wednesday.
