The government didn't fall, though it was close until the last minute. Three Tories didn't show up, and one Blocquiste missed it as well. They rolled Liberal Andy Scott in on a wheelchair (he's recovering from surgery).

There was some drama, too, because Liberal MP Samite Bulta was late getting in from the airport. The Liberals stalled for time. Meanwhile, the homophobe O'Brien seems to have been lying -- no Liberals broke ranks.

This isn't even the end. Last night was just stuff in the main budget, like approving money to pay government employees for the next year (what kind of bastard votes against that?), and keep the government operating. There's another vote today.

Today, debate starts on C-48 -- the NDP's add-on money for universities, the homeless, and the environment. It's the most controversial part of the budget, and the most likely to fall. That vote's later this week.

ETA: I just realized that if the government falls today, that means that the election would probably happen on the same day as the sixth Harry Potter book comes out. That would at least be a way of getting people out of the house to go to the polls.

Question is, would it hurt Pierre "Wormtail" Pettigrew's election chances? :p

What, and give Stephen "Voldemort" Harper a chance at anything? :P
Honestly... I can't, for the life of me, figure out what anyone sees in the conservative party. I'm stumped. Clueless. Just not seeing it, not at all.

Well, some I know out west used to vote Alliance/Reform because it was "our party" -- same reason that there are federalist francophones who vote PQ/BQ. They believed it would protect regional interests.

There are fiscal conservatives out west on a message board I'm on who frequently say they can't bring themselves to vote Liberal, even though Martin's Liberals are fiscal conservative now.

Then there are those, like my father, who vote for them because they're sympathetic to fascism. That's a whole other mindset, and can't be talked to rationally.

I don't understand how anyone can consider Canadian politics boring. I've been on the edge of my seat for weeks and it seems the balancing act is set to go on quite some time. I also find it hilarious that the Conservatives' popularity has dropped so dramatically as a result of their recent activities that they're now desperate to avoid an election, too.

He's now saying he's going to do the barbecue circuit, to show people he's warm and funny.

It's taking every fibre of my being not to point out the obvious joke about Stephen Harper, barbecues, and "warm and funny." That joke would be in very bad taste...

...sort of like a barbecued Stepehen Harper.
