Well, where to begin? For those of you coming to my journal for the political stuff (and I know there are a few), it almost seems unnecessary to lambast Harper because he's taken no effort to conceal his evil.

The latest shock is banning reporters from asking questions at press conferences. Harper doesn't want any questions. He'll tell us what we need to know.

Of course, before that he was throwing a hissyfit over Afghanistan. They want more troops over there to move from a defensive, peacekeeping position to an offensive (and try to win a war that neither the US nor the USSR could). When it looked like parliament was going to reject the bill, he claimed he didn't need its support to boost the number of troops.

Then there's the refusal to lower flags for dead soldiers, and the like, as he tries to draw attention from the fact there are actual deaths going on over there. And he's drawn all his war-rhetoric from Bush.

Meanwhile, Harper wants a vote on repealing same-sex marriage before summer, but the religious right is urging him to delay while they apply pressure tactics to members of parliament. They think that time is on their side.

(I remember arguing with Harper apologists before the election, including one gay one, who were 100% certain Harper would not re-open the issue.)

I'm horrified.

I'm curious: if same sex marriage is repealed, where does that leave same-sex married couples? Do they lose their benefits or is there just a moratorium on new ones?

Good question. It would require the use of a special provision for creating unconstitutional laws to do this, and once the constitution is out of the the picture, all bets are off.

Stephen Harper has said that existing same-sex couples would be allowed to remain married, but the man is a compulsive liar, so who knows...?
