Jun. 12th, 2006 03:53 pmSo I've been doing a lot of historical research about queer life in Montreal (and Canada generally). Right now I'm reading up on the Montreal tabloid press reporting in the 1950s. Here are two of my favourite headlines from 1957, translated by me:
Believe it or not, this relates quite directly to the novel I'm writing ^_^
Editing goes well, though there were some setbacks. I've also been kind of sick the last couple of days, so naturally I'm suddenly getting lots of hours at work. It always seems to end up that way :/
EDIT: Seems I'm not getting LJ-notification when someone responds to a comment or post. So if I miss something, sorry about that!
"40 Homos celebrate the New Year in an unimaginable orgy!"I've also been trying to locate the old bars and hang-outs I've been reading about. They're marked on maps in my books without addresses, so it's hard to know which building's the one I'm looking for.
"Lesbians numerous in the countryside!"

Date: 2006-06-13 05:32 pm (UTC)I'm also interested if there's any information from an earlier date. Sortie de l'Ombre is great, but it has very little pre-1950. I'm wondering if there's anywhere I could go for more turn-of-the-20th-century information...?

Date: 2006-06-13 10:34 pm (UTC)The first comes from a magazine called Ici Montreal, a now-defunct tabloid that should not be confused with the Mirror's sister publication in French which started long after the tabloid died.
The second comes from a similar paper called CanCan.
Both were very, very like Le Journal in content. There were about a half-dozen similar.
