So I'm going to English Academic Hell.

(I picture as a vast auditorium where they're holding a neverending conference entitled "Postmodernist and poststructuralist responses to Marxist readings of George Eliot's Middlemarch".)

My sin? I'm reading Spenser's The Faerie Queene, and can't shake the mental image of Queen Gloriana as Princess Zelda from The Legend of Zelda video games, and the Red Cross Knight as Link.

In my defence, the characters from The Faerie Queen are supposed to be Elves. Very, very Protestant elves making war on Catholic dogma in a thinly-disguised allegory, but elves nonetheless.

ETA: On the subject of Elves, Protestant and otherwise, I'd just like to sure my players know we're having a game tomorrow. Shall it be my place, or somewhere else...? For the record, we have air-conditioning now.

You get all of today's points.

I had an entire class on the Faerie Queene in my second semester at McGill. I had the greatest prof so it was a lot of fun (even though it was for 2 hours at 8 am).

And since Gloriana is supposed to be Elizabeth I, now you'll have to picture good old Liz as Zelda too. That'll do wacky things to history...

I can't help but wonder how Christianity would feel about having magical creatures adhere to their faith however..

Oh, it's a lot of fun to read. The fantasy format softens the the Protestant propaganda, and makes it go down much more easily -- which the poet said was his intention in his letter to Sir Walter Raleigh.

As for Christianity and magical creatures, my first thought was how the djinn are in the Quran. God apparently made them of "subtle" -- smokeless -- fire.

Apparently, the djinn could choose to be obedient to that God or disobedient (unlike angels, who have no free will). And obedience to God is pretty much the definition of Islam, so there are effectively Muslim genies running around.

So surely there could be Protestant elves. We have a precedent here.

If you were not gay, and also at the other end of the continent, I would jump you for this. ^_^

I'm working in the fraternity/sorority building this summer. We have Delta Delta Delta up here at NAU. Their chapter room has one of their Tri-Delt logos on the carpet immediately inside the door. It looks JUST like a Triforce. I walked in and immediately had the unsettling feeling I was in Hyrule Castle, and probably someone nasty was waiting for me further on.

^_^

(Actually, Link makes a very good Red Crosse Knight. But I'm actually imagining Una as Zelda, which is getting confusing :/ )
