Dec. 17th, 2006 07:43 amSo I'm at the airport waiting for my flight. Whenever I'm in an airport, I think about what Mark Kingwell said about airports being bland non-places, interchangeable the world over.
Looking forward to seeing
jc2004,
snowdaemon, and
node357, as son s I'm out of th non-place.
Its been a chaotic week. It was madness at work -- it's never been so busy. Then on Tuesday, we had the company dinner in one legendarily-bland, upscale restaurants that charge exorbitant amounts for tiny portions in the middle of the plate. Probably the best part of that evening was when my two favourite co-workers (both in their late 30s) decided to have a thumb war and a slapsy fight across from the new guy in charge of North America for the new owners.
The hightlight of the week was certainly
rougemacabre's Yule party. We played Guitar Hero (I can't seem to get more than 69% of the notes eveb for a song I know and like). I kicked ass at Star Wars Trivial Pursuit, which is probably not the kind of thing I should be admitting in public.
And thank you everyone again for the gifts ^_^
My reading time is divided right now between Noam Chomsky's Cartesian Linguistics and manga. Day of Revolution was fantastic. I'm now reading the brilliant Canadian, manga-style comic Scott Pilgrim, my Yule gift from
maidenofirisa. And now I'm disappointed that none of my American friends informed me that there are subspace highways all over the world that "they don't talk about in Canadian schools" ;)

Date: 2006-12-17 05:29 pm (UTC)I use to be able to answer most of the questions in Star Wars Trivial Pursuit but I looked at them during the evening and realized I only knew about 10% of them. I guess my manga knowledge destroyed my Star Wars knowledge.
I'm glad you're enjoying Scott Pilgrim. It's a really great comic!

Date: 2006-12-18 11:45 am (UTC)Thank you. If I ever did continue on to a PhD and a professorship, I'd like to teach a course in graphic novels. And I'd want some Canadian content on that list, and I can easily imagine taching Scott Pilgrim.
I wonder if I'd ever live long enough to see The norton Annotated Study Edition of Scott Pilgrim.

Date: 2006-12-18 03:50 pm (UTC)Just because you mentionned annotations (alright so it has nothing to do with the Norton) the author randomly comments on the book and explain so of the stuff on his livejournal: http://destroyerzooey.livejournal.com/
You might want to check it out.

Date: 2006-12-17 05:33 pm (UTC)I'm glad my company dinner was in a nice (if also ridiculously expensive) restaurant. My meal was divine. We didn't have any fun games though unless you consider pressuring people to drink a game. :P
And I was good at Star Wars Trivial Pursuit too. We can be geeks together. ^_^
Wasn't Day of Revolution hilarious? I lend you vol 2 when you get back if you'd like. ^_^

Date: 2006-12-18 11:46 am (UTC)I'd love to read it. With that as a background, Princess Princess suddenly gets a lot funnier.
