I'd always hoped that J.K. Rowling would throw in a gay character into this decade's most popular book series. And it turns out she did.

People are saying this was dropped in out of the blue, but I actually thought that in the last book it was pretty obvious, and said so in this spoiler-filled entry.

Up until then, though, I figured Colin Creevey would just marry Ernie MacMillan.

ETA: And the answer to the question of "Is Mugglenet still homophobic?", the answer seems to be "Yes." They're deleting all threads and all posts on the subject -- it's creepy.

I stopped visiting that site -- even though it's the largest HP fansite in existence -- after they pushed out a poor bisexual girl for speculating that a character might be gay. I went back to see their reaction, and it's dead silence.

The people who run those forums seem to have missed the theme of the series entirely.

Thanks for linking that. It's a very nice news. Also, yep, somewhat obvious. I was amused by her reaction that if she had known it would make people so happy she would have told us before. I also liked her comment about fan fiction. Of course, both the fan fiction and the communities already exist....

At one point she mentioned she might publish a book filled with these little bits about characters. I really hope she does.

She must not go online much -- she always seems to underestimate the scope of the fanfic.

She's said she probably will publish it -- and donate the proceeds to charity.

Well there's already so much HP DJ that I would be surprised if it didn't already exist.

True, and the quality of that fanart is always very good ^_^

I always thought how funny it is that Ron is kind of goofy in the art of most Western artists, but hey always make him a bishounen in Japan. Must be the red hair.

I just finished #7 over the Thanksgiving weekend, so I can now get caught up on these things. Your take on what the other Horcruxes should have been is most amusing.

Unfortunately, it seems that some people are more resentful than happy at the revelation (http://community.livejournal.com/queer_rage/698619.html).

I don't think they read the transcript all that carefully. To me it seemed "The truth is -- I always thought of Dumbledore as gay -- he was in love with Grindelwald."

They seem to have read it as "The truth is, I always thought of Dumbledore as gay. He was in love with Grindelwald."

The power of punctuation there -- was is a clarifying aside, the other a negation of the original claim.

I can't criticize -- I've flown off the handle for not reading things carefully, too.

It's not a perfect portrayal at all -- it's got too much of the "perfect, wise, sexless gay best friend" stereotype so common these days. But she is sympathetic, and trying, and I think that's what counts.
