Zankoku Tenshi no Teze
Mar. 25th, 2005 03:19 pmIs there any greater pleasure than drinking Honey/Chamomile while reading a manga you've waited five years of your life for?
I took a break after reading a full canto of Don Juan, and read Evangelion, volume 9. The animé was one of the most powerful and beautiful stories that exists in any medium. Appropriate for the day, too, since Evangelion takes Judeo-Christian stories and turn them on the head.
The story, too, has come a long way in translation. The earliest versions censored -- no, not the violence or the controversial religious stuff -- but the subtly-done queer relationship between two guys. The VHS subtitled version in English muted the relationship in English, while in the dubbed version, one of the voice actors was so homophobic, the scenes came off like one boy was some kind of sexual predator.
The DVD version in English was much more honest. And it's nice to see that the editor of the English-translated manga admits there was attraction, at least on one side, in the animé.
Anyway, that was like happiness in printed form for a few hours. But now I must turn from the Zankoku Tenshi back to my Teze (only
montrealais,
seal7, and
jenjoou are going to get that).
