I was going to post about the Iliad, but right now I'm squeeing because I actually have an internet connection on my laptop. I've been using my roommate's computer and work computers for the last ten years.

I can actually chat again. How do I do that again? I haven't done it since the days of ICQ.

And yes - the Iliad is very, very good. The stuff about Achilles and Patroclus is very sweet, the battles are brilliant and ingeniously described, the stuff about the gods is beautiful, and descriptions of funerals and ceremonies was rich and wonderful. I'm glad I read it.

But I still help but be disappointed, because almost nothing I expected - the Trojan Horse, Achilles' Heel, the Judgement of Paris - was actually there. Nobody had warned me. It was strange to get to the end of Book 24, and Achilles was still alive and Troy unburnt.

I always greatly enjoyed the story of Achilles and Patroclus myself :)

Pretty sure I even used Patroclus as a screen name in the ancient days of ICQ!

Yeah, it's one of my favourite stories, too.

And after putting my ships out on to the seas of IRC, I'm beginning to wonder if ICQ pre-dated the Iliad. I feel old :)

Ha! Yeah, "how does the Iliad end" is a question I've seen used on tests to distinguish those who read it from those who watched Troy. Glad you enjoyed, though!

If you want info on the end, the Odyssey and the Aeneid are the place to go.

What's the classicist's take on whether they were written by the sae person/people. I seem to recall that was in dispute, from my high school days.

So how's the internet look from your own computer? Any brighter? Any more vast? Any more full of trolls? ;)

It's very bright, and shiny. I haven't seen any trolls, but then I haven't crossed many bridges.

What chat program(s) are you using and what time do you usually make an appearance? I usually stick to AIM these days but with my Trillian, I have access to AIM, ICQ, IRC, MSN, and Yahoo.

I discovered IRC, but I don't know anything about the others, yet.
