I finished Cerebus the Aardvark today. Brilliantly funny -- probably the best work of fantasy/satire I've ever read, at least in graphic novel form. So it's a pity I'm not going to be reading anymore.

It's a shame. If I ever do wind up teaching Canadian Literature, I'd like to throw a graphic novel into the course, to combat the idea that they aren't literature. Cerebus -- where the art and writing are flawless -- would be a much better choice than the incredibly boring autobiographies that seem to be the only other graphic novels Canadians write.

Yet, the more I learn of the man's views, the more the thought of giving him money bothers me. Today, I unearthed a new one, more extreme than the others I'd heard. From Wikipedia's entry on Cerebus:
'This was followed by an even harsher essay in issue #265 called "Tangent," in which Sim identified a "feminist/homosexualist axis" that opposed traditional male values. He also argues that husbands should have the legal right to spank their wives and states outright that women are "inferior beings".'

Why does such a brilliant artist have to be such an asshole?

[livejournal.com profile] em_fish, I think we've picked over the same issue with Orson Scott Card and Ender's Game.

I solved the problem by buying his stuff secondhand.

I've never seen anything of Sim's secondhand, unfortunately. Once people have his stuff, they rarely part with it.

They some at the new Grande Bibliothèque on Berri, but unfortunately it's an ongoing storyline, and they look like they're missing chunks :/
