The Adventure
I first DMed this module when I was 11 years old. This is my fifth campaign with it. It is the first time it has taken the party more than five minutes to clear the introductory section.
It took three hours.
The process is pretty basic -- get the players to find and use a teleporter device. The party is driven into a cave by a raging storm. In the cave, they fight a troll (which can only be taken down by fire and acid). The troll is dispatched readily, and the party goes deeper into the cave where they find the teleportation device in a small wooden box.
A family of ten trolls is supplied by the module, who arrive home should the party be reluctant to go deeper into the cave. The module notes this is unlikely to be necessary.
Usually, my party's dispatched the first troll with two fireballs, then goes in, searches for treasure, and uses the device.
This time, the first troll nearly killed the party. Then the party went to the troll's lair in the inner cave, then left without searching it for treasure. As they returned, I threw the family at them.
Did they run back to the lair? No. The wizard created an interdimensional pocket of space, that could last five hours. I had the trolls settle down into the entrance cave, roasting their meal and blocking the entrance. Meanwhile, the party discussed plans.
Numerous ideas were suggested. One party member wanted to summon a skeleton soaked in oil and lit on fire into the troll cavern. Another wanted to light their lair on fire and lure them into it. Another suggested using magic to cover the trolls in lamp oil and light them.
Four hours later, they were ready to make their moves. I had the party member spreading lamp oil around the lair spot the wooden box. He took it with him, but didn't open it. When he tried to enter the interdimensional space (or I thought he'd tried to -- there was a miscommunication) the box rattled -- it's not supposed to be taken out of normal space. He dropped it.
Finally, the party made their move, luring one of the trolls out and lighting their lair on fire. The trolls moved to the cave entrance to avoid inhaling smoke. One of the party members picked up the box with the teleportation device. It still was not opened. The party decided to pick up the fiery brands from the troll's campfire, and rush their line with them, hoping to get out of the cave and take their chances with the flooding pass.
The words "sodomizing trolls with fiery sticks" were used. By me.
They set the trolls on fire, but didn't manage to get them out of the way. The trolls stayed outside to avoid the fire, but remained close enough to block the entrance.
Then the party opened the box.
At this rate, it shall take take significantly longer than the usual three sessions. Not that I didn't enjoy myself.
In fact, each party member is getting 500 additional XP, for good ideas, for good roleplay, and for entertaining me ^_^
man_dragora, our next session will be next Sunday, at noon. I'll send you a letter a little later, but I'll just say I like all your ideas :)
