Why do I go to dances, when I just come home depressed...?

Spent the evening chatting with a nice, beautiful, intelligent guy without the slightest interest in me. Which is pretty much par for the course :/

But I'm getting to the point where I've heard that intelligence is sexy one too many times from guys who only date gorgeous, stupid men. Lip service is paid to intelligence over and over again, but it really does seem to be all about bodies :/

I also find that grad students get none of the perks that ought to be associated with being surrounded by intelligent lovely people. We're so snowed under with obligations that we're almost giving off don't-touch-me vibes.

Very true. I think we all do it, but I know I'm also not well-liked in the program.

I also find that the stereotype of all-men-in-English-literature-are-gay is an absolute lie. I seem to be the only gay guy in the program right now, so there's no romantic possibilities there at all.

I used to be reduced to tears every single time there was a dance in Grade 8. In fact, I was so scarred that once I actually walked the 10-minute jaunt to the school for the one and only dance where attendance wasn't mandatory, then freaked at the very last possible minute, turned and ran home. I was so close to walking in that some of my friends saw me in the doorway and asked me afterwards why I balked.

Nowadays it's about 50/50 whether I will walk away from a dance-or-similar-gathering content or traumatized.

Dances weren't mandatory at my school. I invited guys to go with me to my high school prom, but no one would, so I went alone.

(I realize that plenty of gay guys go with female friends, especially now. But then, at that moment, it would've felt like I was hiding something, so I didn't.)

It's one thing for high school, where everyone's so insecure. But at 29 I feel like some of this drama should be over with :/
