Ever since we found the PDF files of every name given to a child in Alberta each year, I've been looking for equivalent lists for elsewhere.

I figured the truly atrocious baby names would belong to BC -- and I found the list. Sadly, BC doesn't seem to list a name unless at least five children have it -- a shame since the truly atrocious names in Alberta (Diezel-Blaise, A.K.I.L., etc) were only given to a single child. The true horrors are unique.

Still, I wasn't at all surprised to find that in 2006, 39 girls were named Trinity. That fits with the popularity of "Neo" in Alberta.

So far no Atreyu, no Raistlin, and no Draco -- all of which have developed an enduring popularity in Alberta.

The enduring popularity of Wolverine has made Logan one of the most popular baby names in Canada -- it now regularly shows up on top-10 lists. There were 187 of these in BC in 2006. By contrast, there were only 118 Michaels.

The hippie naming conventions are alive and well in BC, but I suspect the 5 boys named Ocean and the 9 boys named River will all wind up being corporate lawyers.

I am glad the traditional deity names are making a comeback -- all those Apollos in Alberta, and there several Freyas in BC. And 6 Odins in 2005.

ETA: I found a complete list for Quebec. there are more little boys named "Phoenix" than either "Erik" or "Scott" or "Jeremiah" in 2006 -- and more than twice as many "Phoenix" as there were "Jean-Luc" in a majority French-speaking province.

Quebec has an agency that's supposed to deny awful baby names, but I'm astonished at the things that get through. How the hell are you supposed to pronounce ENORCKSONXXXXXXXXXX? And Gay-Alexander is more a statement of fact than a baby name.
