So I'm thinking about cancelling the game this weekend. Neither
foi_nefaste nor
em_fish can make it, so I was wondering how other people felt...?
It's just not as much fun whe we're down to half.
Not much else to say. It's been a pretty productive couple of days editing and packing. Plus I've been getting more hours at work. Yet again we had clear evidence that English teachers can't add, or even copy information from one sheet to another -- three teachers had to revise all of their attendance for the last two months.
I have been reading some very good books. I'm quite amused that this book of the queer history of Montreal (Sortir de l'Ombre)was funded by both the federal and provincial government. And I strongly recommend the graphic novel Fun House by Alison Bechdel -- it's brilliant.

Date: 2006-06-09 01:34 am (UTC)That's enough to get me interested. What's it about?

Date: 2006-06-09 02:07 am (UTC)It's incredibly powerful.

Date: 2006-06-09 01:51 am (UTC)I also had to institute a typing/spelling test, after one especially notable incident where a player who *hadn't* been typing since he was eleven like the rest of us joined up and quickly found himself 1) swamped, and 2) consistently misunderstood. They don't have to be perfect, but I really do prefer it when I can tell what bloody language they're trying to type in. ^^;
What edition/setting do you play in, may I ask? The last one I got to play in was a 3E version of Forgotten Realms, and the last one I ran was GURPS/Illuminati University.

Date: 2006-06-09 02:10 am (UTC)I've been DMing for 20 years now (though obviously not the same group). My favourite module was a very long first-edition module called Desert of Desolation, which I'm adapting from 1.0 to 3.5.
We put a very heavy emphasis on roleplay, and very little on hack-n-slash.

Date: 2006-06-09 03:10 am (UTC)As a DM, my general rule is "if it entertains me, it goes". If someone comes up with something especially clever that doesn't throw the entire game out of whack, I'll usually let them skip the roll. I've played a variation on GURPS that's essentially diceless, but only with a group of very reasonable people who could role-play their skill level appropriately.
If you ever do play online, I have a 6th level Wild Mage named Ariadne who was, last I checked, stuck in Waterdeep. She graduated from the school in Cormyr with a solid C average -- A in theory, F in practicals, which is the grade you usually get when you're incapable of casting anything without making something explode. Her familiar is a duck named Hogarth whose alignment is listed as "Paranoid Delusional", whom she acquired because jumping in the duck pond is the easiest way to put out flaming robes and hair when Flaming Sphere has gone awry. ^^;;;

Date: 2006-06-09 03:41 am (UTC)My Chinese horoscope apparently goes "Rooster: metal, metal, metal, fire" which also elicits peals of laughter for some reason.

Date: 2006-06-09 09:57 pm (UTC)She has a penguin "familiar" (actually, it's her sister, who she's accidentally polymorphed and who won't un-polymorph with the usual spell-breaking magicks). And Ed is very, very helpful -- but since she tries to be helpful with her magic, disaster often ensues.
And the party started in Waterdeep, though they are now in the Raurin Desert :)

Date: 2006-06-09 10:19 pm (UTC)The school in Cormyr was very anxious to have her gone, and since then she's gotten better at everything BUT magic. Hogarth has had his share of triumphs too (DM the oplayed him), such as the time he, in a blind panic, pecked a carrion crawler to death one hit point at a time. ^^;
DM also requested backstory for everybody so he could torture us with it, and thus Ariadne wound up the seventh child of a seventh son of a seventh son, which makes things worse. ^^;; Her older brothers are all paladins and tanks, except for Aethelred, a ranger who spends a suspicious amount of time with elves. XD I think he was pointing at her parents being Harpers when we quit, but Ariadne knows diddly about that and didn't catch on.
The trip to Amn was interesting too. Ariadne has an INT of 20 or so, but almost zero common sense. I had party members diving to stifle her every time she wanted to be magically helpful.

Date: 2006-06-09 09:54 pm (UTC)And I didn't hear a thing about this new job. I can think of a half-dozen places, though, that qualify for that moniker. Which one is it...?
