Got called into work this afternoon. Not to do placement tests, but to my old job in administration, which I prefer.

They were swamped. Paper was stacked everywhere. Teachers were coming in for books for courses that hadn't even been entered in the computer yet. We were fed-exing textbooks to Quebec for courses that didn't even teachers yet, but were supposed to start Monday. And nobody knew what was going on because the people in charge of this mountain of paper were stuck doing phone tests all day.

I think I made a dent in the paperwork, though not much more than a dent. I'm still not officially working there though, but if things keep up like this, I won't-be-officially-working-there full time.

Other than than, I'm about 48 pages into my novel, and I'm enjoying Solomon Gursky still immensly. But it seems my big project will be on Susanna Moodie and Margaret Atwood. I can't wait to tell them all my theories of Susanna Moodie's secret life hunting ninjas in the Canadian wilderness.

(It's Concordia university. If I handed that in as a final paper, I'd still only get an A-)

Is there any particular reason why they won't have you working officially?

I wouldn't put that past most universities to give an A- to a samurai Moddie essay. I got an A on my paper about how anime is a better medium for yakuza movies based on a close analysis of City Hunter. Granted I did put a lot of thought into so it's less silly than it sounds... really I just wanted to write a paper about City Hunter. ;)

Why I'm not hired officially? For the same reason that a person who doesn't have time to come in and chat will spend an hour chatting at the door.

They don't want to hire me because, looking over the books, they can't afford it. But they do need someone there, and hire me on a day-by-day basis, damn the expenses, because otherwise they'll can't possibly get the work done.

They're probably assuming the workload will get lighter come the end of September. Given all the new contracts, that's a rather large assumption, especially since two of the most talented people left (one for maternity leave, the other was pushed out).

I'm really sceptical about the value of a grade at Concordia, given the un-well-thought-out trash I've turned in for theses. I almost want get called on my substandard work, ecause then at least I'd know there were standards.

No problem with doing work on stuff that interests you. That's pretty much all that's keeping me going here, at this point :/
