A quiet couple of days. This is my first real week to rest since the start of the semester. When you factor in how hectic the little spaces between semesters have been, this is really my first week to rest since starting Grad school.

I've been writing. I've been ironing out problems in the novel I couldn't focus heavily on while doing essays. I think I'm still on-track for my self-imposed November deadline.

I've been reading. I finally got around to a volume of Yami no Matsuei I've had for ages -- volume 9. Matsushita's characters, her stories, and her art never cease to astonish me. I can't believe that series was cancelled.

Now I'm on to something a little more hardheaded, Joel Bakan's famous book about corporations. I didn't think it was possible for me to hate Milton Friedman more than I did.

I also didn't realize that in most industrialized nations, it's actually illegal for a corporate president to use the corporation's money for anything besides making a profit -- when a corporation works towards environmental initiatives and community services for any reason other than PR, they're considered by law to have cheated the shareholders, who are the actual owners.

In happier news, I baked a cake today. For no reason.

mmmmm I like cake....

Being able to do something besides school is really awesome. I still have two exams left...

Yami No Matsuei really is an awesome serie. I can't remember if it was you or Jen who got lend me the first one a few months ago... Anyway I've bought a few of them since.

I could comment about the corporation part but I've been studying economics for the past few hours and I'm starting to be able to argue why such a law would make sense.... Just don't ask. I'm tired and the school books have taken over my brain.

I've heard there are people who don't like cake in the world, but I don't think I've ever met any.

As for Yami no Matsuei, I loaned my collection to [livejournal.com profile] foi_nefaste awhile back, so you might have read them then. So I might have read them then.

I've always had an amateur's interest in economics. It's such an important field, and anyone interested in politics has to be able to converse intelligently in it.

As for arguments for corporate selfishness, you needn't go over them. I've heard Milton Friedman and Ayn Rand's arguments, and I don't agree with either of them. I've been involved in the anti-poverty movements and the environmental movements long enough to know that corporate selfishness has no real benefit for society.

Ah well. You probably don't want to hear about this stuff so recently after exams.

For our housewarming party, I'll make cake. Maybe this one won't come out of a box :)

I can believe it either, it's a great series but that's the way marketing is, sad but true. It might be picked up again in the future. It's happened before, though rarely. (I wanted to look up the info on the Hakusensha site but I forgot that the computers at work can't display Japanese... when I get home I guess)

Yay cake! I like cake... though I'm still from yesterday. I don't think I'll eveer eat again... ;)

I'd love it if it were picked up in the future. But it's an old series in Japan, and do Japanese companies ever take Western sales into account for that kind of thing...?

I don't know about Japanese companies but there was a Korean series called INVU which had been cancelled at vol. 3 in Korea but because of it's popularity in the West, they started work on the final, fourth volume. So it's not impossible. And sometimes in Japan series that were cancelled in one magazine were picked up by another. I wouldn't hold my breath but it's not impossible.
