The Tori concert was wonderful on Tuesday. Mostly new stuff -- the new album sounds really interesting -- and it was made quite beautiful by some interesting light shows. The only element that made it less-than-perfect was the lack of [livejournal.com profile] em_fish. You would've loved it my dear -- and thanks again for the tickets.

Actually, there was another element in the beginning. I was seated behind a man who must've been close to seven feet. However, he was so offended by the gay couple kissing in the seats in front of him that he complained -- and when nothing was done, stormed off. Imagine, a gay couple at a Tori Amos concert! Next thing you know, Madonna and Barbara Streisand will have gay fans, and then the last barriers shall truly be broken!

But thanks to his jackassery, I was able to see the rest of the concert.

In utterly other news, it's odd when one's totally unrelated geekdoms collide. I'm researching an obscure Canadian literary journal called Les Mouches Fantastiques, published by gay journalist Roswell George Mills and lesbian poet Elsa Gidlow. It was a collection of avant-garde poetry, arguments for gay liberation, and anti-war essays from the First World War. Only one copy of one issue is known to still exist, and I'm going to read it sometime this month.

However, they sent off copies to the United Amateur Journalists' Association when it was first printed, and one young writer at the association reviewed it -- the only review I can find of it. I've ordered a copy of that review. It's by a man named Howard Phillips Lovecraft, who was not yet the most famous science-fiction writer of his generation. I'm very curious to see what he has to say, but he was so conservative I'm sure it's nothing but bad things.

The Tori Amos concert was gorgeous yesterday -- that venue (Place des Arts) really brings out her music much better than the Bell Centre.

I'm still not very familiar with many of her newer songs, but I liked what I heard. There were very few old favourites, but at least we got "Crucify" ^_^

Thank you [livejournal.com profile] em_fish for inviting me. And it was nice to see [livejournal.com profile] link2lando again, too.

A Rainbow for Dumbledore

(title for [livejournal.com profile] em_fish's benefit)

I'm amused that the most common reaction to Rowling's outing of one of her best-loved fictional characters is "That was totally dropped in -- there was no clue."

I went back to Philosopher's Stone last night, and realized that the first time Harry reads about Dumbledore, on that collectible card, it says, "He enjoys knitting patterns..."

Yeah, if that ain't a giveaway, I don't know what is.

I really enjoyed the Tori Amos concert last night -- and thank you to [livejournal.com profile] em_fish for the ticket and company. We had seats in the lowest tier, where we could see everything. She had a piano, an organ, an electronic keyboard, and one we couldn't properly identify, but which [livejournal.com profile] em_fish thinks might called be a two-tone. She frequently played two of these things at once while singing at full voice. It was amazing.

Most of the songs were her newer material, and I didn't know them all that well. We got her to keep coming back for encores at the end, and she finished off with "1000 Oceans." There was only one song from Little Earthquakes, which is everyone's favourite, but I'm sure she's sick of singing from that album by now.

She's even crazier on stage than in interviews.

Anyway, right now I'm at a friend's house, where I'm sort-of house-sitting. And I have permission to use his internet. There's the most adorable marmalade-tabby kitten with oversized tail and paws stumbling around here, and getting into everything.
